Biography Henry Hitchings
Watercolor landscape painter and lithographer, Henry Hitchings was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He contributed to M.J. Whipple's "New England Scenery from Nature" published in 1852. During the 1850s-60s, he exhibited his watercolors widely, including the American Art-Union, National Academy of Design, Boston Art Club, and the Boston Athenaeum. He was a professor of drawing at the U.S. Naval Academy from 1861-69. In the 1870s he became a teacher of drawing in the Boston public schools and slowly teaching took priority over his artistic work.
The artist died in Boston, Massachusetts in 1902.
