Biography Henry Wellge
One of the more prolific of the bird's-eye-view artists, Milwaukee-based Henry Wellge, working between 1878 and 1910, did more than 150 city views in twenty-six states and the Province of Quebec.
Wellge was born in Germany, and immigrated in 1871 with his brother, William. His name first appeared in Milwaukee in 1878, and from 1879 to 1884, he worked for Joseph J. Stoner, lithographer and publisher. From 1884 to 1886, Wellge was in a partnership with George E. Norris, and that firm eventually became Norris, Wellge and Company. In 1886, he formed his own company, Henry Wellge and Company, located at Wells and 2nd Street.
