Born in Charlton, Worcester county, Mass., son of Capt. Ephraim Willard, of the good old New England farmer stock, respected and beloved – the inmate genius that makes the artist, early constrained him to leave the country, and come young and unsophisticated to the city which afforded the sight of pictures, and the instruction for the painter.
He entered the studio of (Henry) Inman (1801-1846) in New York, where he found kindness and art, and whence he brought the skills that in after years so honored his teacher.
Mr. Willard devoted himself to portrait painting, though his friends posses a few historical or fancy figures and groups
