Herbert Gilbert (1926 – 2005)
A painter, printmaker, performance artist and a prominent educator, Professor Emeritus Herbert Gilbert (aka: Herb Gilbert; aka: William Herbert Gilbert) was born in Regina, Saskatchewan and died in Vancouver, British Columbia, where he had lived since 1939. His works were exhibited with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, in three Biennials of Canadian Art, and in the landmark exhibitions “7 West Coast Painters” and “100 Years of B.C. Art”. (1)
His mediums included oil paint, collage*, photography, collagraph*, woodcut* and live performance. His subjects included figures, landscapes, still lifes, genre, humor, current events, social commentary, and pure abstraction – color, shape, line and texture
