Allen, Dr. John Howard (1866-1953)
Dr. John Howard Allen was born in Brownfield, Maine in 1866. He worked as a banker in Portland to pay for his education (M.D., University of Pennsylvania, 1902), devoting himself thereafter to medical practice as an Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat specialist in Boston and Portland.
Upon his retirement in 1931 he developed his artistic avocation. He achieved considerable note as a painter, working unceasingly at art until his death in 1953.
Dr. Allen was a Clinical Assistant in Otology at Bowdoin College from 1914 to 1921. One of his paintings, Blue Shadows, depicts a group of people and was given to the college in his memory by his wife, Mrs. Allen.
