Biography Hugh Barron
Hugh Barron was the son of John Barron, apothecary to the Westminster Dispensary, Soho, London, and elder brother of William Augustus Barron (1751-c.1806), also a painter. Barron's portraiture is notable for its early maturity and similarity to Reynolds's work.
After attending a drawing school run by Daniel Fournier in 1764, Barron became a pupil of Sir Joshua Reynolds (c.1764-6). He is listed as a member of the Society of Artists of Great Britain in 1765, and exhibited there annually from 1765 to 1772.
By 1767 he had left Reynolds, and lived in Panton Street and Litchfield Street, Soho, before traveling through Italy between April 1770 and April 1771. During his absence, Barron was elected fellow of the So
