Carl Wilhelm Hugo Schnars-Alquist (1855-1939)
A son of a long-established merchant family in Hamburg, Hugo Schnars-Alquist became a successful marine painter, after being active as a merchant for a short while. Numerous study trips allowed him to discover America, England, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. In 1886/89 he became a master student of Hans Gude (1825-1903) in Berlin. In 1898 he established himself in Hamburg and continued to travel overseas. His oeuvre is characterized by marine and seascapes. Works by Hugo Schnars-Alquist are preserved, for instance, at the Hamburg Kunsthalle and many private collections in Germany. (cbo)
