Biography Ian White
Longtime director of the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco, he painted part time during that tenure and then devoted full time to the activity he has pursued since he was nine years old. An early inspiration was his teacher in Santa Barbara, Joseph Knowles, from whom he took lessons through high school.
He was born in Hawaii. His formal education was in architecture and industrial design, which he studied at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard and at the University of California at Los Angeles. He spent four years in the Navy and then worked in industrial and package design in New York City and did exhibition and graphic design at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and later the Brooklyn Museum, where he designed the Frieda Schiff Warb
