Ida Josephine Burgess was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 5, 1855. She studied art in New York at Cooper Union and at the Art Students League with William Merritt Chase and Walter Shirlaw. Also, as a young girl Ida and her sister had their portrait painted by the well -known portrait painter, William Cogswell.
As a young woman she traveled to France to study painting, eventually winding up in the studio of Mssr. L.O. Merson. While in France she produced her most famous work "During the Mass; Normandie", which was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1885.
She returned to Chicago where she won the competition for mural decoration for the Women's Reception Room of the Illinois State Building at the 1893 Columbian Exhibition Wor
