Biography Ignaz Unterberger
Born in Tyrol Cavalese Ignaz was trained by his uncle Franz Sebald Unterberger (1706-1776). His artistic education was so completely under the influence of the High Baroque. Ignaz 'older brother Christoph (1732-1798) was a member of the Guild of St. Luke in Rome as Ignaz 1769 got there and so the young painter came right into contact with the central artistic personalities of the Eternal City.
Unterberger was a very versatile artist, he produced altarpieces and works in marble as well as frescoes. However, his real preference was of printmaking. This he dedicated himself but only after arriving in Vienna in 1773, where he quite the mezzotint technique has committed itself.
