Biography Jack Grue
The following, courtesy of John Underwood, is from descriptive text of an exhibition July 26 to August 30, 2002 in the Beverly and Sam Ross Gallery of Christian Brothers University of Memphis, Tennessee.
"Jack Grue was born in Kiev, Russia. He studied in the Ukraine and served with the anti-Bolshevik White Army. Grue left Russia at the end of the Russian civil war and settled in Vienna. He continued his studies there at the Academy of Fine Arts and reached success as scenic director for theatrical producer Max Reinhardt. Grue left Europe in 1939, when the Nazis took power in Austria, and resettled in Memphis.
