Biography Jacobus Abels
Jacobus Theodorus Abels was born in 1803 in Amsterdam and was a pupil of the animal painter Jan van Ravenzwaay (1789-1869). After his study trip to Germany in 1826 he moved to Hilversum, where a group of young artist had settled down to paint. Amongst them were Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (1803-1862) and Albertus Verhoesen (1806-1881) whom Abels befriended. In 1824 Abels showed his first work at the yearly exhibition Leevende Meesters, titled Landschap met vee. From then on he would regularly contribute to the yearly exhibitions. Circa 1827 Abels married the daughter of the animal painter Pieter Gerardus van Os (1776-1839) and they moved to Baarn. His father-in-law had a huge influence on the young artist.
