Biography Jacques Valcke
Jacques Vacke was an artist born on May 1 in the Belgian city of Ypres (Ieper) in 1749. Where he received his first drawing lessons is unknown. Some sources mention him already in 1769 in Rome. Like many artists, he was on a study trip to Italy where he stayed a long time in Rome and made numerous drawings of ruins in red chalk in the Neoclassical and Realistic style.
In Rome he was good friends with Joseph-Benoît Suvée (1743-1807). In March 1772 he became a student of the Academy of Paris. He was there a protégé of Joseph-Marie Vien (1716-1809).
Back in Ypres,he painted portraits,including a portrait of the Gent Bishop Gerard Van Eersel.
Jacques Valcke died at Ypres on 7 Januari 1795, almost 46 years old.
