Biography James Alden
Known primarily as a watercolorist by some historians, little is known about James Alden except that allegedly he was a watercolorist who spent most of his life as an explorer. However, Edan Hughes in his book, "Artists in California, 1786-1940" writes that references to him "as a watercolorist are erroneous." He became an admiral and died at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco in 1877 and "was never an artist as verified by his family".
Alden was born in Portland, Maine in 1810, and was a descendant of John and Priscilla Alden. At an early age, he joined the United States Navy. Between 1838-42, he accompanied Charles Wilkes on a surveying expedition surveying and charting the Sacramento River. In 1848-60, while stationed in Vera Cruz
