Born in Marshall, Missouri, James Morris became a landscape painter especially fascinated with Southwestern subjects, which he did in bold colors in both oil and watercolor. He listed his birth dates both as 1898 and 1902.
Morris earned a B.A. degree from Washington and Jefferson College and studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy from 1925 to 1926. He visited Santa Fe, New Mexico where he met John Sloan and became intrigued by the landscape. Sloan later arranged a scholarship for Morris at the Art Students League in New York.
