Born in Cork, Ireland, James Griffin was an active artist in the Bay Area of Northern California in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
In Ireland, he was a pupil of James Brennon at the Cork School of Art and immigrated to San Francisco in 1885. He established a home in Oakland at 3343 Chestnut, and from 1912 to 1915 taught painting at the California College of Arts and Crafts. He died in Amadore County California in 1931.
