Biography James Burt
A Boston artist whose activity is documented from 1835 to 1849, James Burt painted landscapes and sometimes collaborated with Samuel Lancaster Gerry. They were neighbors on Tremont Row, and in 1836 when both artists were in their 20s, the two of them did a series of Boston views that were on the engines of the Boston Fire Company. Over the next few years, they painted together several landscapes based on the engravings of Englishman William Henry Bartlett. Then Burt mysteriously disappears from the artistic scene after the 1840s, but Gerry went on to become famous.
