Biography James Smither
An engraver, seal cutter and printmaker, English born James Smither was based in Philadelphia from 1768 to 1778 when he was accused of high treason for counterfeiting currency for English use during the British occupation of Philadelphia. He left for New York City with British troops, advertising his trade in New York newspapers. He returned in 1886 to Philadelphia and resumed his trade, although little of his later work survived.
When he first arrived in Philadelphia in 1768, he announced his trade in the Pennsylvania Journal of April 21, 1768: "James Smither, Engraver, At the first house in Third-street, from the Cross-Keys, corner of Chestnut-street, Philadelphia, PERFORMS all manner of ENGRAVING in gold, silver
