James Whale is best remembered for directing the all-time great horror classics "Frankenstein" (Universal, 1931) and "The Bride of Frankenstein" (Universal, 1935) as well as for being the subject of the acclaimed 1998 Lion's Gate Films biopic, "Gods and Monsters," starring Sir Ian McKellen as Whale. The film highlighted Whale's love of painting (which becomes an important plot point in this movie that co-stars Brendan Fraser and Lynn Redgrave) and it went on to win an Academy Award for 'Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published.'
