Born in Merrill, Wisconsin, Janet Reid was the daughter of brilliant parents who were graduates of the University of Wisconsin. Her father became a circuit judge, and the family moved to Wausau, Wisconsin where Reid graduated from high school. She also graduated from Milwaukee Downer College, and in 1915 went to Chicago where she studied at the Art Institute of Chicago with George Elmer Browne and George Pearce Ennis.
