Biography Jean Hitch
Jean Leason-Hitch began her art career in Melbourne, Australia, where
she studied commercial design and painting at the Parahan Technical Art
School. Under the tutelage of her father, Percy Leason, a
well-known supporter of the tonality tradition, she was schooled in the
elementary principals of the tonal technique advanced by artist Max
Arriving in New York in 1937, Leason-Hitch continued her career doing
odd jobs in commercial studios. In 1943 she was appointed Curator
of Art at the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences. Here
she revitalized the art program and developed a community interest in
