Jeff Daniel Smith, a California native, attended El Camino College and studied art history, drawing, and painting. In his mid 20's he began working for commercial studios which specialized in the creation of paintings, and murals, for commercial spaces and backdrops for photography and films.
He moved to the Monterey Peninsula in 1994 and began plein-air painting. With six other Peninsula artists (Richmond Woodson, Cyndra Bradford, Johnny Apodaca, Gerard Martin, Mark Farina, and Barry John Raybould) he helped form the now well known artist group, the "Informalists".
