Jerome Anthony Hughes was born of Irish parents in New Jersey in 1856. Hughes was a physician who painted in his leisure. He came to California with his family in 1870 and studied at the Mark Hopkins. By 1895 he was a resident of the Bohemian Club in San Francisco. He died there on Dec. 5, 1910.
