Biography Joan Howe
Born in Albany, New York, in 1915, Joan Howe was the grandaughter of Frank Anderson, the Hudson River painter. Her father, Victor C. Anderson was also an artist and exhibited at the National Academy.
Howe painted in Marathon Key, Florida in the winters and in Albany in the summers. She traveled widely and painted from Mexico to Maine. She was a founding member of the Florida Keys Watercolor Society in 1980.
She lived and had her studio on Marathon Key. Based on labels attached to the backs of the watercolor paintings by her acquired by this gallery, it appears that all of the subject matter is Florida, particularly the Keys. An approximate date based on the age of the materials used would be 1950-70.
