Joe Selby

 (1893 - 1960)
Joe (Joseph) Selby was active/lived in Florida.  Joe Selby is known for marine-ship portrait, genre and landscape painting.

Biography   Joe Selby

Known for his ship portrait paintings, Joe Selby was born in Mobile, Alabama, and settled in Miami, Florida.  He was an African-American painter whose subjects were the ships and yachts that docked at the Miami city pier between 1921 and 1959.

As a twelve-year old deck hand, he had lost a leg in a shipboard accident, but during the 1930s, his love of marine activity led him to join a steamer out of Mobile.
