Biography Johann Steffan
training as a font lithographer, the Swiss Johann Gottfried Steffan
(1815-1905) moved to Munich in 1833. He studied at the University of Polytechnic
under Walter Romberg as well as at the Academy of Fine Arts under
Christian Zimmermann, Peter Cornelius, Julius Hess, Julius Schnorr von
Carolsfeld and Friedrich August von Kaulbach.
In his turn for realistic
landscape painting, he was influenced by Carl Rottmann. Steffan's studio
was a central meeting place of Swiss artists in Munich, including
Arnold Böcklin. Today, works by Johann Gottfried Steffan are on display
in major museum collections, including the Kunstmuseum Lucerne and the
Kunsthaus Zurich. (cko)
