Johann Jakob Schalch received his artistic training in the workshop of the Schaffhaus portraitist Johann Ulrich Schnetzler and the Augsburger animal and still-life painter Karl Wilhelm de Hamilton. In 1743, he traveled through France and Germany, and in 1754 he moved to London, where he had access to the royal court, where he could respect respectable successes. He succeeded in the Hague, where he moved in 1763. After his return to Munotstadt in 1773, Schalch lived close to the Rheinfall near Neuhausen, which was to become the main subject of his artistic work in the following years.
