Biography Johann Spilberg
The Düsseldorf born painter Johann Spilberg was recommended to Rubens in Antwerpen by Prince Elector Wolfgang Wilhelm von der Pfalz in 1640. However, since Rubens was already dead upon Spilberg's arrival, he traveled further to Amsterdam where he was apprenticed by Govaert Flinck. In 1650, Spilberg was to paint his tour de force, the "Schutterstuk" commissioned by the Amsterdam town council which still hangs in the city to this day.
