Biography Johann Schirmer
Johann Wilhelm Schirmer enrolled at the Düsseldorf academy in 1825,
where he became a pupil of Wilhelm Schadow. He was entrusted with
leading the landscape course in 1829, and was officially appointed as a
professor in 1839. He went on to play a highly important role in
establishing the academy's renown as an outstanding training institute
for landscape painters. As of 1828, Schirmer undertook a number of
educational sojourns to the Eiffel, Belgium, Switzerland and Normandy,
which were followed by a longer stay in Italy from 1839-1840. He became
director of the newly founded art school in Karlsruhe in 1854, where he
continued to work as one of the most significant landscape painters of
the era until his death.
