Biography John Botto
John Botto was born in Louisville, Kentucky, of Italian parentage. He was active there from 1878-79, and from 1881-89, where he was listed in the city directories as an "artist" and at other times as a "landscape painter". He traveled to Europe around 1890, living in Italy and France. He remained in Europe and died in Paris, leaving an endowment providing for annual art contests for Louisville school children.
Botto's style has been described as "Tonalism," a major stylistic trend in American landscape painting of the 1880's and 1890's. Botto's romantic seascapes are bathed in the dim light of dawn or dusk, incorporating a narrow range of color, keyed to a dark green tonality, achieving a hazy atmospheric effect.
