John Bell-Smith (1810 - 1883)
A prominent Canadian painter and leader in the art community, John Bell-Smith was born in Rotherhithe (Greater London), England and died in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he had lived since 1878. He immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1866 and lived there, except for a brief period in Hamilton, Ontario (c.1868), before moving to Toronto. He exhibited with the Royal Academy of Arts* in England and with the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts* in Canada. He is mentioned in numerous Canadian art history books and there is a painting of his in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada. He was the father and early teacher of well-known Canadian artist Frederic Marlett Bell-Smith. (1)
