Dr. John Bertie Smith was born in 1908 in Lamesa, Texas. He received his bachelor's degree from Baylor University in 1929, his master's degree from the University of Chicago in 1931, and his doctoral degree from Columbia University in 1946. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, Chappell School of Art and New York University. He was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, and Phi Delta Kappa.
Dr. J. B. Smith was chairman of the art departments of Adams State College, the University of Wyoming, the University of Alabama, the Hardin-Simmons University, and was dean of the Kansas City Art Institute. Dr. Smith served as the chairman of the art department of Baylor University from 1960 until the late 1970s.
