Biography John White
John Blake White was an historical, portrait, and miniature painter. He was born September 2, 1781, near Eutaw Springs, South Carolina. In 1899, he went to London and studied for three years under Benjamin West. On his return to America in 1803, he painted portraits in Charleston and Boston (1804), but meeting with little success, turned to the study of law and began to practice in Charleston in 1808.
Except for a brief residence at Columbia, South Carolina about 1831, he spent the rest of his life in Charleston. He continued to paint in his leisure, specializing in scenes from American history, four examples of which are in the Capitol at Washington.
