Biography John Burr
John Burr was born in 1834. He began his artistic career at the age of fourteen. He started by painting
portraits of the gentry.
He enrolled at the Trustees' Academy in
Edinburgh, along with his younger brother, Alexander Hohenlohe Burr
(1835–1899). Together, they built a reputation as two of Scotland's leading artists.
The brothers stayed in Edinburgh until 1861, then both moved to London.
John first exhibited at The Royal Academy the following year. Both
brothers would go on to enjoy prosperous careers, with John perfecting
the humorous genre picture so redolent of the high Victorian period.
