John Byrne Davenport, my father, was raised in Ithaca, NY, where his father was professor and dean of Economics at Cornell. His mother died when he was 7. His father died in ’31, when John was 17.
About 1933-34, he was in Florida with his godmother; he headed to Rollins College to study with the sculptor and educator, George Ganiere. Then, he went to Europe to study, a common thing in his day. He studied sculpture under Antonio Sciortino at the British Academy in Rome, then went to the Atelier Bouchar at the Ecole Superieur des Beaux Arts in Paris.
When he returned to America he traveled to Cranbook to study with Carl Milles. Then he moved to Provincetown to work within the community until the war pulled him to New York
