John Henry Brown (1818-1891)
Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, he became a professional portrait painter in 1839 but seems to have painted only miniatures from c. 1844 on. He moved to Philadelphia in 1845 and remained there until his death. He was successful in his work, counting among his sitters Abraham Lincoln (from life at Springfield, Illinois, 1860) and James Buchanan.
