John Coles Jr. was a portrait, miniature, and heraldic painter. He was born in Massachusetts, his father was the heraldic painter, John Coles Sr.
He was listed in Boston directories until 1825, and then in 1829 lived in Providence, (RI) and in 1830 Boston. From 1831 to 1848 he had a winter studio in Hartford, (Conn.) and a summer home at Durham (Conn.)
In 1849 he had returned to Providence, but soon moved to Worcester, Mass. He was a friend of James Frothingham and is said to have studied under Gilbert Stuart.
