Biography John Rankin Barclay
John Rankine Barclay was born in Edinburgh, in 1884. He trained at the Royal
Scottish Academy Schools in 1908. Additionally, he won the Guthrie award (c. 1911), and a
Carnegie Traveling Scholarship which allowed him to visit and work in
"A sincere impressionist", French Impressionism was a great
influence on him. He met AR Sturrock at The Royal Institution and
became a member of The Edinburgh Group. This group of progressive painters included; J.G Spence Smith, D. M. Sutherland, William Oliphant
Hutchison, William Mervyn Glass and A R Sturrock.
He painted in both oil
and watercolour, frequently depicting figures in a landscape or town
