Biography John Ridgewell
John Ridgewell studied at Colchester School of Art between 1954-8 where he was taught the skill of wood engraving by John O'Conner, who was related to the surrealist painter Paul Nash. In 1958 John entered the Royal College of Art aged just 21, he was a student at the same time as David Hockney and R B Kitaj. On graduation he accepted a position to teach at Scarborough School of Art from 1961-6, leaving to focus solely on painting. His artistic style was strongly influenced by the work of Georges Braque in 1956, who John admired throughout his life.
