John Stermer's art reflects his feeling for a special environment, the American Southwest and in particular, New Mexico. In 1959 John Stermer came to New Mexico after spending several years study in New York, Paris and Barcelona. Born in Elmira, NY, Mr. Stermer first studied with Julius Lars Hoftrup. After World War II, he attended and taught at the Art Student's League in New York. He then studied at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris. Mr. Stermer stayed on in Paris and later Barcelona to study and paint.
