Biography Joseph Darbes
Darbes was born in Hamburg in 1747. In 1759, he attended the academic
art school in Copenhagen. His teachers were Johann Martin Preißler and
Carl Gustav Pilo. Darbes continued his education in St.Petersburg under
Vigilius Erichsen in 1768. This was followed by travels to Germany,
Holland and France. His sitters include Catherine II., Later Empress
Maria Fedorovna and the mathematician Leonhard Euler as well as Johann
Wolfgang Goethe. In 1785 Darbes went to Berlin, where he made the
acquaintance of Daniel Chodowiecki and Anton Graff.
