Biography Joseph Heger
German born, Joseph Heger was in the Southewest, having enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1855. He served in the Apache Campaign of 1857, the Utah War of 1858, and the 1859 Navajo Campaign which started at Abiquiu, New Mexico and ended at Canyon de Chelly.
From this period, twenty-five of his drawings are in the collection of the Arizona Historical Society and the Yale University Beinicke Library. The drawings reflect factual descriptions of the region's forts, including Fort Defiance, and landscape scenes including Canyon de Chelly and the confrontations with the Navajo.
From 1860, Joseph Heger disappeared from recorded history, but surfaced briefly in 1896 to collect his military pension. His death date and place are
