Born in Grand Haven, MI on June 28, 1890. Smith moved to California in 1917 and in 1927 settled on the Monterey Peninsula. He was a resident of Carmel until his death on Nov. 3, 1939. He is remembered for several maps of Peninsula communities and pen-and-ink sketches of historical buildings of Monterey County.
