Biography Joseph Steingrubel
Joseph Steingrübel studied at the Munich Academy from 1826. Between 1834 and 1837 he traveled to Switzerland, through Tyrol and Italy, staying in Rome from 1834 to 1845. Apart from landscapes of southern Germany, he is mainly known for those set in the Alps, Italy, and especially in south Tyrol.
Lauterbrunnental is a valley in the Bernese Oberland in the Swiss Alps, and the word ‘Lauterbrunnen’ refers to the loudness of its rushing springs and streams. The valley was known as the Claro Fonte as early as the 13th century. The White Lütschine river flows through the valley and the Lauterbrunnental was also known as the “valley of the 72 waterfalls”.
