Joseph was friends with Jervis McEntee, and Julia McEntee Dillon, they were all influenced by John Vanderlyn of Kingston (1775-1852). In his early twenties, Tubby was inspired by Vanderlyn's sketches of Kingston, and one can see the ideas of Natural landscape with sky melding into ground with little human interference.
