Biography Judson Dejonge Smith
A painter, teacher and muralist, Judson Smith lived both in Michigan
and Woodstock, New York where he was the Director of the Woodstock
School of Painting. In 1945, he was an art professor at the
University of Texas.
Smith studied at the Detroit Art Academy
with Joseph Gies and John Wicker, at the Art Students League, and with
John La Farge, John Twachtman, and Kenyon Cox.
He has been described as a "businessman turned painter". (Smith,
183). Before moving to Woodstock in 1921, he completed several
murals, but after that he did primarily landscapes and figure
subjects. Among his recognitions were a gold medal at the Detroit
Institute of Art, Logan Prize at the Art Institute of Chicago, and
