Julia Sague was born on October 14, 1870, the youngest child and second daughter of a prominent Poughkeepsie, NY family.
She studied at the School of Painting at Vassar College, earning a diploma in 1891. In 1891-1896 she enrolled at the Art Students League of New York. Her program of study included a number of painting classes with J. Alden Weir, one from William Merritt Chase, and life drawing with Kenyon Cox. She also studied modeling and drawing from the antique (instructors not verified).
