Painter Justus Engelhardt Kuhn, active circa 1708-1717, was the earliest professional artist to work in the Middle Atlantic colonies in America. Kuhn was a German who settled in Annapolis toward the end of 1708. Nothing is known of his previous training, but he was patronized by the powerful Roman Catholic families of the Maryland colony, the Carrolls, Diggeses, and Darnalls.
His adult bust portraits are undistinguished, but his full-length children's portraits, such as those of Eleanor Darnall and Henry Darnall III (circa 1710, Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore) introduce an element of romantic fantasy into early American portraiture.
