Carl Orem Van Buskirk was born November 19, 1886, in Tiffin, Ohio. At some point in time between 1900 and 1907, Van Buskirk studied with Frank Duveneck at the Cincinnati Art School/Institute. By the time Van Buskirk was in his early 20s, he had made several painting expeditions coast to coast and worked as a cartoonist for the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Between 1911 and 1919, Van Buskirk lived in New York City at 51 West 37th Street (1911), West 55th Street (1915), 152 West 55th Street (1916) and 1947 Broadway (1917).
