Biography Kate Sophia Torrey
Born in Calabogue, New York, Kate Sophia Fuller married Arthur C. Torrey in 1867 in Jersey City, New Jersey. Her artistic education began at the Art Students League in New York and later at the Chicago Art Academy. She also studied in Paris with Frank Edwin Scott.
By 1873 the couple had settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan where they spent much of the remainder of their lives, although they were to travel extensively. In 1894, Torrey was hired as an instructor at the Akeley Institute for Girls in Grand Haven, Michigan, where she taught art for a number of years.
